apple crisp in a slow cooker

Ingredients:

Topping
·         1 cup AP (all-purpose) flour
·         1/2 cup light brown sugar
·         1/2 cup white sugar
·         1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
·         1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
·         1 pinch salt
·         1/2 cup butter, cut into dice-sized pieces
·         1 cup walnuts, chopped
Seasoned Apples
·         4 large apples (6 cups when peeled, cored, and diced into small pieces)
·         1/3 cup white sugar
·         1 tablespoon cornstarch
·         1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
·         1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
·         2 tablespoons lemon juice, fresh or bottled

DIRECTION:

1. Begin by mixing all of your topping ingredients together in a medium bowl. Whisk until everything is nicely blended.
2. Next, add the diced butter cubes to your topping mixture and crumble until combined.
Tip: You can use a fork to blend the dry ingredients with the butter, but using your hands will make the mixture crumble more quickly due to the warmth of your hands. The finished texture should resemble coarse crumbs instead of powder.
3. Add the chopped nuts to the topping mixture and set aside while you prepare the apple mixture.
4. Place your diced apples into the slow cooker. Then, in a small bowl, whisk the sugar, cornstarch, and remaining spices together, toss with the apples, and stir in the lemon juice.
Tip: You can use any type of apples you like, and a combination of tart and sweet varieties (like Granny Smith and Fuji) taste great together!
5. Top the spiced apple mixture with the crumb topping, cover, and cook on high for 2 hours or low for 4 hours. Feel free to poke the apples with a fork to be sure they’re tender.

Tip: To ensure the topping gets crisp, partially offset the slow cooker lid, so the topping can dry. Wait 1 hour, then serve.
